Tune in, turn on...
Aug. 3rd, 2002 10:05 pmWell, the E! channel is doing the Anna Nicole show. I can appreciate that there are new celebrity-based reality shows that are going to feed off the success of The Osbournes, but the way it's marketed bothers me a bit. They call Anna Nicole Smith America's most [adjective] "girl next door". Who are they kidding? When I think "girl next door", I don't think of a stripper who seduces and marries a nearly dead oil billionaire. I don't think "tabloid news icon."
I'd like to see the Henry Rollins reality show. I suppose I only say that because the stories he tells are so interesting. It would follow him around in the off-hours between tour dates, at airports and other various places in the many strange places Rollins ends up in.
I realize right now there's a similar show on the air on Comedy Central, called "Insomniac", hosted by Dave Attell, who chronicles a night of bar-hopping, party-hopping and visits to various tourist sights, both open and closed, and to various all-night jobs. But I think the adventures of an intellectual, if sometimes low-brow, alternative icon might be a bit more interesting than those of a drunk stand-up comic. And the adventures of a drunk stand-up comic are damn interesting.
I bet if Rollins found himself at a LAN party, he might not spend the whole time mocking everyone there. Attell has, at various times, found himself at LAN parties, anime screenings in hotel rooms, and in a youth hostel full of websurfers. It all went over his head, how people could claim to be having fun without mind-altering substances. I wonder what Rollins would have thought or done in those situations. He certainly wouldn't have sought refuge in some random bar with a wall of screaming college students. He's not one of them. He's one of us.
