This week's King of the Hill was pretty painful to watch. Not because of some generic Valentine's Day bitterness, but because of the peril Bobby Hill was in, which constituted the main conflict in the episode.

Bobby Hill is a role model I wish I had when I was his age. Insignificant things don't phase him; he has practically no concern for what other people think of him. Sure, that kind of attitude almost got him in trouble when he was offered that runway modelling job, but most of the time he was better off for it. When he had to walk with a cane, he got a top hat. And his relationship with Connie was both more innocent and more mature than any junior high school relationship I could imagine. Even their breakup was met without fear, but with an attitude of discovery.

But, you know Bill next door? The depressed, needy one who still pines for the woman who left him?

Well, Bill broke Bobby. And, seeing Bobby transform from Joseph's confident mentor to a little Bill was just an excruciating experience. It's like watching Ben Franklin with Alzheimer's disease. Everything that made him Bobby had disappeared.

Fortunately, it all turned out okay, and I won't spoil... but, it just underlined for me the lesson we can all learn from Bobby Hill. All that fretting I did in public school was pointless, and self-doubt is far too often misplaced, and unnecessary..
