tv alert!

Nobody liked Showgirls.

But for those of you who think the only problem with that movie was too much nudity, and that it would be very watchable if it were edited for TV and shown with commercial interruptions, you can watch it on TNT right now.

Hurry, it's just starting!  You'll miss vital plot points!

BAH HA HA! I'm sadly watching this right now, and almost made a post to make almost this very point. You rock.

I remember seeing this when it FIRST came out on vhs or whatever, and thinking it wasn't bad. Watching it NOW? Oy, the acting is HORRID.

BAH HA HA! And I love how they're painting on bikini tops to cover the nudity!

I wonder how much money they had to spend to do that, and how many man-hours of tedious work was required to go through it frame by frame.

I also wonder if TNT's sponsors know what movies they're sponsoring, or whether they just get a line item that says "Random Movies". Because if they had a list of movies, surely someone would scan it and ask "yes we'd like to not bother paying you for Showgirls, and these other movies that obviously don't translate to broadcast."

Don't bother-- get the Special Edition DVD (aka "Fully Exposed Edition") with the David Schmader audio track. He's apparently a semi-regular on the Daily Show or some such national venue, but back in Showgirls' day, he was (actually still is) a writer for Seattle's alt-weekly, "The Stranger," and he put on a show wherein he would stand on stage while the audience watched Showgirls projected beside/behind him, and he'd add his commentary, called "The Greatest Movie Ever Made."

Apparently the producers of the DVD had figured out that the watching-it-ironically crowd would be at least as big as the hey-this-looks-good-cuz-it-has-a-naked-girl-on-the-cover crowd, and hired him to do his commentary on the DVD.

It transforms the terrible drama into an excellent comedy.

You win at DVD. I think I'll Netflix it.

I like the VH-1 version where they not only digitally added clothes, but patterns to the clothing, which crawl around in creepy amateurish Ralph Bakshi-ish ways.

Isn't that like showing The Aristocrats on network television and bleeping it?

I loved Elvira's review of Showgirls... "This flick is so bad I'd walk out on it if it was playing on an airplane."
