My two most seldom-seen uncles attended Thanksgiving at my parents' house.
One of them was in the Army, and was stationed in Germany when I was very young, in the early 80's. I remember be brought me back a wallet with a map of West Germany on it.
I was talking with my aunt about traveling the world, and the subject of Berlin came up. I asked him if he'd been to Germany since the wall went down. He said "sure, I was there in, what, 1982?"
I pointed out that the wall went down in 1989, as evidenced by how he went to "West Germany" instead of "Germany".
Apparently he didn't remember the wallet as well as I did, because he thought for a moment and said "I went to East Germany."

if he was in East Germany, he was there on a temporary pass...chances of him being approved for more than a day unless he was driving straight through to berlin were slim...
