Everyone's getting sick now. It's been a long time since I had a really fucked-up cold or flu, and I finally got one.

My dad once had an eight-year streak where he didn't get sick at all. I wondered if he was the guy from Unbreakable.

What's the difference between a cold and a flu, anyway?

Colds just give you congestion, runny nose, sneezing, lots of phlegm and headaches. Flu is much worse. It's a different family of viruses-- they can be transmitted by air, whereas cold viruses are usually transmitted on surfaces, such as doorknobs or by handshaking. And, yeah, there's fever, body aches, general weakness, sometimes nausea and vomiting too. You basically feel like total crap for a few days. Flu can also much more easily kill you if your immune system isn't up to par.

I used to get some kind of flu once or twice every year. Now I get the yearly shot whenever I can-- they give them free at the office-- and the only years I got flu were when the vaccine didn't come out early enough. People claim the shots don't work, but in my experience they usually do.
