I didn't put my groceries away, because I thought I bought all dry ingredients.

Four hours later, I remembered I bought buttermilk.

umm... I put it in the fridge just now, and, well, at least I also have to buy shortening, so I can just re-buy this if it turns out sour.

Except I don't know what buttermilk tastes like to begin with.

Buttermilk tastes icky by itself, so it may be difficult to tell whether it has spoiled by tasting it.

Leaving it out for 2 hours would probably be ok. Leaving it out for 4 is questionable.
